THINGS I FIND INSIDE FUNITURE ladies french kneehole desk

Every now and then something unusual shows up inside my furniture projects.

Like these curtain rods below. Now when I say inside I dont mean in a drawer,

I mean behind the drawers inside the cabinet somewhere.

Really ... how do curtain rods get inside a dresser?

If you know dont tell me it was a retorical question.

Ive found a few Aussie coins and recently a 1965 German Schilling.

I dont assume they will make me rich but they do add interest to the projects.

Another interesting find was the post card dated 1919

but more often then not its just someones missing puzzle pieces,

their discarded matches, a forgotten key, and quite often old receipts.

This one is dated 1976 and its from England.

They seem to be quite polite when

dealing with overdue accounts, it actually says

"Fearing your account has escaped your

notice, we venture to ask the favor of

a remittance within the course of a

few days"

That was awfully nice of them!

Well now back to the project of the day ...

I know a few of you might be getting excited with these sneaky partial pictures,

but please dont get overwhelmed there is bad news coming.

A drawer that has dove tails on the back as well as the front.

Amazing what several hundreds of dollars can buy you huh?

Yes I spent a great deal more than I am use to on this one, but its worth every penny in the end.

She even had a couple of surprises inside for me to find.

Im delighted with that little find, but now the trick will be to find a lock they will open.

Now for the bad news ...

This magnificent, over the top, gorgeous french desk (deep breath)

is already spoken for, but you can see a side by side before and after pic here.

I know that doesnt make up for it, Im a bad bad person for teasing you.

Dollhouse for Peaches Day 12 Part I

Day 12 - Part I - The Pillars
Nows the time to permanently install the pillars. Im using the clamps to hold things in place while I apply glue, then slowly move things to their final positions...

Ill let the glue set for a few days, and then work on some small trim, fill all nail holes, and then the whole piece will be sanded down to 220 grit. More to come!

The Village Carpenter Part I

Recently I has the good fortune to meet with Kari Hultman and take a tour of her Pennsylvania woodworking shop. For anyone who doesn’t know who Kari Hultman is (and if youre reading this I find that near impossible to believe), shes the woman behind The Village Carpenter, one of the absolute best woodworking bogs out there.

Karis shop is a purpose Built room attached to her house. While site logistics may have determined its placement, I feel its coolest feature is its location. Karis shop is located right off her bedroom. Isnt that what we all dream of? Who wouldnt like to wake up and walk right into the shop? In Karis own words "I planned it that way, so that I could work out there in my jammies in the middle of the night if I felt compelled to do so."

Karis shop is 17 1/2 by 36. It has windows along 3 sides (between the shop and bedroom, along the side wall and on the back wall). One of the windows even lines up with Karis band saw so that she can feed it extra long pieces. The shop is well lit with florescent lighting which is helped by white walls and ceiling. There is a detail light which lives in the dog holes of Karis main bench.

When I visited in July the shop was comfortable due to a standard window mounted air conditioning unit. A standard entry door allows access to the back yard and its popularity is evidenced by the trail Karis dogs have worn in the floor leading up to the back door. A pair of French doors exit the side of the shop and allow easy transport of bulky items to the adjoining driveway and garage that serves as a lumber storage shed. There is also small lumber storage area in the back corner. The opposite corner houses a sink, which adds further functionality to the shop.
